I’m Looking for Energy Saving Tips and Tools

As a homeowner, tenant, or small business owner there are many things you can do to lower your energy consumption and save money every day. Please use this list of tips and tools to make your home as efficient as possible.

When purchasing a new refrigerator consider an ENERGY STAR® qualified model. ENERGY STAR fridges are 20% more energy efficient than a non-qualified model.
Letting your dishes air-dry instead of using the heat-dry option for your dishwasher will save you up to 50% of your dishwasher’s energy consumption.
Using lids while you cook on your stove decreases your energy consumption by up to 14%.
Programmable thermostats can reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 10%. In the fall and winter, set your thermostat to 22°C when you are home and 20°C when you are away.
Phantom power can account for up to 20% of household electricity use. Plug electronics into a power bar with a timer or auto-shutoff and make sure they are turned off during periods of inactivity.
An ENERGY STAR^®qualified ceiling fan is 50% more energy efficient than a non-qualified model and works well to circulate warm air around your home.
LEDs last up to 30 times longer than incandescent bulbs and are up to 75 more efficient than incandescent bulbs.
Having a licenced HVAC professional service your furnace once a year can improve your unit’s efficiency by up to 20%.
Pipe wraps reduce heat loss and bring hot water to faucets faster. Try installing them on your hot and cold water pipes. * Never insulate plastic pipes
Maximize your savings by wrapping your water heater with an insulated blanket to help reduce heat loss.
Weather-stripping helps reduce air leaks and can reduce your home’s heating and cooling needs by up to 20%.

Are There Any Available Energy Efficiency Programs?

Rebates and programs are available for eligible customers through Save On Energy. Let our experts help you find the right program for you.

Peak Perks
Participants in Peak Perks save with their smart thermostats by participating in brief, time-limited thermostat adjustments during periods of peak electricity demand that can occur on the hottest summer days.
- Peak Perks events will occur only on weekdays for up to three hours during periods of peak demand for electricity. Events will not take place on weekends or holidays.
- Events can occur up to 10 times between June and September.
- During an event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted between two to four degrees Celsius to reduce your home’s energy consumption.
- You are always in control – you will be notified when an event occurs and can opt out at any time during an event from your thermostat provider’s mobile app, or by simply adjusting your smart thermostat back to your desired comfort level.
- Once an event ends, your thermostat will return to its original temperature setting.
Participants receive a $75 electronic prepaid Mastercard when they enroll in Peak Perks. You’ll also receive a $20 electronic prepaid Mastercard for each additional year you remain enrolled, beginning in 2024.

Energy Affordability Program
The Energy Affordability Program provides support to income-eligible electricity consumers. The program can help you lower your electricity costs and increase your home comfort.
You may be eligible to receive different energy-saving products and services, including:
- A free home energy needs assessment conducted by a trained energy professional to identify energy-efficient upgrades available for your homes, such as the replacement of inefficient appliances, draft proofing, and professionally-installed insulation. These upgrades may be installed during or after an in-home visit.
- Free energy-saving kits customized to meet your energy needs. Your kit could include energy-saving LED lighting, timers, faucet aerators and/or a clothes drying line. All expert advice and energy-saving home upgrades under this program are completely free of charge.
Home Energy Evaluation
Enova is happy to support the local environmental charity and social enterprise better known as Reep Green Solutions. They offer a variety of services to residents within the Waterloo Region. You can find out more about their services by visiting their website: reepgreen.ca.

HomeEnergySaver program
Do you have an electrically-heated home?
The HomeEnergySaver program offers incentives to Ontario homeowners with electrically heated homes to purchase and install heat pumps that can help manage their energy use more effectively. Participants will also receive an additional financial incentive for a smart thermostat that can maximize the operation of their new heat pump.
Who is eligible?
If you meet the following requirements, the program could be right for you:
- You own the home.
- Your home is one of the following:
  - Single family dwelling
  - Semi-detached
  - Duplex
  - Row/townhouse
  - Apartment/condo unit in a building 3 storeys or shorter
- Your home was built before February 26, 2024.
- Your home’s primary heating system is electric.
- Your postal code includes N0B or N3B
