Key Takeaways:
- Enova Power introduces Flexible Grids, a capacity auction program which will allow qualified customers who can reduce or shift their load or operate distributed energy resources, such as batteries or generation, to sell their capacity to the grid during times of high demand.
- Flexible Grids will help defer and potentially avoid the need for costly infrastructure expansion.
Introducing Flexible Grids, Enova Power Corp.’s (Enova Power) capacity auction program for commercial and industrial customers with 50 kilowatts or more of available electricity capacity.
Through the program, qualified customers who can reduce or shift their load or dispatch distributed energy resources such as generation or battery storage systems, can earn revenue by making that capacity available to Enova Power during peak demand periods through an online auction, called a capacity auction, reducing strain on the local grid and deferring the need for costly infrastructure upgrades.
Open to commercial and industrial customers in south Kitchener
The program is open to medium and large commercial and industrial customers in south Kitchener who can reduce their electricity demand by at least 50 kilowatts. While some customers are already participating in provincial demand response programs, Flexible Grids has a local benefit, allowing Enova Power to respond more quickly to local system needs.
“Flexible Grids is one of the many ways Enova Power is advancing its capabilities towards becoming a Distribution System Operator,” says Greig Cameron, President and CEO at Enova Power. “This program is part of our continued investments in a safe, reliable, and flexible grid that is equipped to meet the evolving needs of our customers and communities.”
“By partnering with our customers who already have capacity available, we are able to defer costly grid investments and strategically meet the electricity needs of all our customers,” says Dorothy Moryc, Vice President, Grid Transformation and Chief Distribution Officer at Enova Power. “It also financially benefits our customers who have flexible generation capacity. It’s a win-win all around.”
Registration opens November 2026
Registration for the Flexible Grids capacity auction will open in November 2026, with the first auction in January 2027. The first customer activations will start in May 2027.
