Enova Power Corp.’s (Enova) Waterloo location was recognized for its commitment to worker safety during the annual Ontario Electrical Safety Awards in late September.
The utility received the 2022 Worker Safety Award from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) for its participation in the Roadmap to Psychological Safety Program and its expanded employee wellness program.
Enova’s Waterloo location (formerly Waterloo North Hydro) was one of 10 Ontario companies and the only electrical utility to participate in the roadmap program. Jointly run by Howatt HR Consulting, Workplace Safety & Prevention, and St. Mary’s University, the roadmap program uses eight building blocks to advance psychological health and safety in the workplace.
The program was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic as a response to concerns about employee burnout. It focuses on an all-encompassing approach to mental health and wellbeing, including employee training, peer support, and access to mental health experts as well as confidential employee surveys to help monitor and track mental health. The survey results are used to shape the utility’s approach to supporting mental health at all levels of the organization.
Employee health and mental health awareness are key components of Enova’s overall employee wellness program. In addition to the roadmap program, employees receive mental health training and expert advice on staying healthy through mindfulness, exercise, and improved nutrition.
“We’re honoured to receive this recognition for our commitment to workplace safety,” said Enova Co-CEO Rene Gatien. “At Enova, we believe in safety and wellbeing above all and this award recognizes just one of the many ways we’re putting safety and mental health and wellbeing first.”
Enova also supports various mental health awareness initiatives, including Bell Let’s Talk Day and the Movember movement.
