Fraud Awareness and Scam Safety

Enova Power Corp., believes in safety and well-being above all else – including the safety of your personal information. Scams in the energy sector have increased by 77 percent since 2020, and happen every day. Scammers are using phone calls, emails, fake website, social media, home visits and more to try to defraud you and your family.

We want to assist you in staying safe and sniffing out potential scams by providing you with some tips and tools to help sniff out fraudulent activity and stay protected.

You can stop fraud – just say no – hang up the phone, don’t click on suspicious links, and don’t provide personal information.

Common Scam Attempts

We’re here to help you stay safe from fraud and scam attempts. There are a number of common scams that frequently target our customers. Learn more about them to help protect yourself and your personal information

  • Enova Power never threatens immediate disconnection over the phone. We follow rules outlined by The Ontario Energy Board regarding disconnection and notifying customers about past due accounts. If you receive a call claiming to be from Enova threatening to disconnect you if an immediate payment is not made, hang up – it’s a scam! Remember, you can stay up-to-date on your account and check your balances from anywhere you may be by signing up for My Account.
  • Enova will never insist that you pay your bill over the phone. You can choose to pay by credit card over the telephone, or in person in our office, or online through your bank. Please note that if you choose to pay by credit card, payments are processed through Paymentus, our third-party processing centre and a 1.75% service fee applies.
  • Enova Power does not accept cryptocurrency or bitcoin as a form of payment. We don’t accept cryptocurrency as an acceptable form of payment. Enova will also never accept a credit card payment over the phone. To learn more about the types of payments we accept, visit our payment options web page.
  • Watch out for unsolicited in-person visits about your energy services. In-home inspections are not required to apply for energy saving programs. For information on programs available to you, visit our Saving Energy and Saving Money webpage.
  • We do not accept in-person payments at locations other than our offices. We only accept payments at our Victoria Street office (301 Victoria Street South, Kitchener) and our Country Squire office (526 Country Squire Rd, Waterloo). If you’re asked to drop off a payment at another location, it’s a scam.

Fraud Safety Tips

There are a number of things you can do to protect yourself from scams and fraud. Learn how to best protect yourself and your information by following these simple tips

  • Just Say No: Don’t be intimidated by high-pressure sales tactics. If a telemarketer tries to get you to do something right away, you can hang up or request the information in writing
  • Do your research: Always verify that the organization you’re dealing with is legitimate before taking any other actions
  • Protect your online accounts: Protect your accounts by creating strong passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication and remember, do not reveal personal information over social media.
