Five tips to help you spot scam attempts

Key Takeaways

  • Many scammers threaten immediate disconnection of electricity accounts if a payment is not made. Enova Power never threatens immediate disconnection or demands immediate payment over the phone.
  • Enova Power does not accept bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or gift cards as payment. In-person payments are only accepted at Enova Power’s two offices.
  • If you receive a suspected scam call, do not share personal information with the caller, and hang up immediately.  Please report the call to law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or at antifraudcentre.ca.

March is Fraud Prevention Month. To mark the occasion, Enova Power Corp. (Enova Power) is sharing tips to help customers recognize scams and protect themselves and their information.

Scammers frequently target Enova Power residential and business customers via phone and text, using convincing tactics to hoodwink their victims.

Here are five ways to identify a scam attempt:

  • The caller threatens immediate disconnection over the phone. This is a common pressure tactic. Enova Power does not disconnect customers without several warnings, and will never threaten immediate disconnection over the phone.
  • The caller asks for payment by Bitcoin or gift cards. Enova Power never accepts Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, or gift cards as payment.
  • The caller tells you to pay at a random location. Only pay in person at Enova Power offices: 301 Victoria Street South, Kitchener, or 526 Country Squire Rd, Waterloo.
  • You get a text message from Enova Power. Enova Power does not text customers or ask for account details by text.
  • The caller asks for your banking information over the phone. Enova Power never asks you for banking information by phone.

If you receive a suspected scam call, hang up immediately. Do not share personal or account information with the caller. Please report the call to law enforcement and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or at antifraudcentre.ca.
